We did it! Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz look thrilled as they take a bow after making joint Broadway debut in Betrayal
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz made their joint Broadway debut playing a married couple in Betrayal on Tuesday.
But thankfully their real life marriage doesn’t follow the same pattern as that of the protagonists of Harold Pinter’s 1978 play, which is being staged at the Ethel Barrymore Theater.
The production uses reverse chronology to examine the dynamics of a seven-year clandestine relationship of the wife (Weisz) of a London publisher (Craig) with his best friend and literary agent (Rafe Spall), who is also married.
And after months of rehearsals, both Daniel and Rachel had proud smiles on their faces as they took their closing bow after their first performance was over.
While this is the first time the couple have appeared on Broadway together, while Daniel previously starred with Hugh Jackman in A Steady Rain.
With Betrayal starting in 1977 and ending in 1986, Daniel and Rachel were both attired in outfits from that era.
Looking a world away from his role as suave spy James Bond, Daniel wore a brown waistcoat, navy shirt and black trousers and sported an unfashionable hairstyle.
Brunette beauty Rachel wore a long red kaftan as she beamed proudly at her husband at the close of the play.
While Daniel emerged afterward, wearing a blue shirt and grey cardigan, to sign autographs for fans, there was no sign of his spouse.
Daniel has recently revealed that the couple have sometimes struggled with their status as married co-stars and how the play has put their relationship into the spotlight.
He told Vulture: 'We’re separate entities professionally, and we’re happy to stay separate entities, and we’re not a professional couple. Because our relationship is nobody’s business but ours.
'We’re going on stage together, and we know we’re exposing ourselves, but we’re professionally exposing ourselves, which is what we do. What we do as actors. We’ll go to work, and we’ll do it, and we’ll go home.
He added: 'Marriage is hard. Everybody has to work at it. And to have it exposed publicly doesn’t do it any favors.
'Personally I’m not interested in other people’s relationships. Just to bring it back: Betrayal is about how what goes on in people’s marriages is far more complicated.'
Daniel and Rachel – who has a seven-year-old son from her relationship with Darren Aronofsky - shocked the world when they tied the knot in a secret ceremony in June 2011 after just a few months of dating
Their revival of Harold Pinter's searing, semi-autobiographical dissection of a complex romantic triangle reunites producer Scott Rudin with 10-time Tony-winning director Mike Nichols.
The play was last performed on Broadway during the 2000-2001 season when it starred Juliette Binoche, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery.
Betrayal is set to open at New York's Ethel Barrymore Theater on October 27 and will run until January 5, 2014.
