59-й Evening Standard Theatre Awards в Лондоне - стал вечеринкой  года. Редактор Сара Сандс (Sarah Sands), воздает должное газетному магнату Евгению Лебедеву, в очередной раз собравшему вместе особых гостей, в числе которых были и известных актеры: Хелен Миррен (Helen Mirren), Андриан Лестер (Adrian Lester), Грейсон Пери (Grayson Perry) и Том Хиддлстон. У каждого из них взяли небольшое интервью о блеске и мишуре жизни актера на и вне сцены. Существует ли что-то более великое, чем театр, открывающий в людях самое лучшее? Том Хиддлстон и другие актеры, достигшие мировой известности на большом экране, покорно смирились перед аудиторией, состоящей из старых товарищей, и немного рассказали о себе. 

У Вас существует какой-то свой особый подход к изучению Шекспировских стихов?

Том: Я скорее похож на лунатика, разгуливающего по паркам Лондона и разговаривающего сам с собой. Я должен двигаться, я не могу учить, сидя за столом.  Я меряю шагами пространство, зазубривая стихи, вбивая в мозг. Не секрет, что повторение, повторение, повторение, - это как мастерство в теннисе.

Мы видели, как Вы танцевали на шоу Алана Карра Вы не рассматривали возможность принять участие в мюзикле?

Том: Мне бы очень хотелось сделать что-то вроде “Парни и Куколки (Guys and Dolls), но у меня ограниченный вокальный диапазон. Но особенно мне нравится “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat”, Laurence Fox (песня из мюзикла «Парни и Куколки»).

Show stoppers: backstage at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards

The 59th Evening Standard Theatre Awards was London’s party of the year. Editor Sarah Sands describes an evening that saw Sergeant Brody serenading The Savoy and the paper’s owner and host Evgeny Lebedev invites winners, presenters and special guests to take a seat on the world’s longest casting couch

There is something about the stage that brings out the best in people. Performers who have achieved global fame on the big screen are humbled before an audience consisting of their old mates. In the climax of this year’s 59th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, Dame Maggie Smith faltered in the spotlight, her eyes glistening with tears, a lump in her throat, as she said that her heart actually ached for the theatre and she wanted more than anything to return to it. ‘But there is no Mrs Lear!’ she cried, as directors and playwrights across the room conferred in a collective aim to find a role for Maggie.

Earlier in the evening, Clarke Peters’ soft and slow rendition of ‘There’s No Business like Show Business’ was spine-tingling. Dame Edna Everage was at the top of her game, sympathising with the Comedy Award winner David Walliams over parents who could not even spell his surname correctly. The host for the evening, Damian Lewis (below), came on stage with a copy of Friday’s Evening Standard and a superbly reworked version of ‘Leaning on a Lamp-post’. He stage-managed the astonishing roll call of talent and national institutions — Boris Johnson, Barbara Windsor, Sir David Attenborough, Helen Mirren, Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear — with wit and warmth. The lure of theatre never felt stronger.

Do you have any particular method for learning Shakespearean lines?

I’m the man who looks like a lunatic walking around the parks of London talking to himself. I have to be on the move, I can’t learn them sitting at a desk. I march myself around outside,drilling the lines into my brain. There’s no secret: it’s repetition, repetition, repetition, like practising your forehand in tennis.

We saw you dance on Alan Carr’s show; would you consider doing a musical?

I’d love to do something like Guys and Dolls but I have a limited vocal range. I especially like ‘Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat’.
