7 things we learned about David Beckham's Brazil show Into The Unknown
David Beckham has made his first serious steps into the world of broadcasting in a new BBC travel documentary, Into The Unknown.Taking a break from football and the world of fashion, Beckham heads out on a road trip in Brazil and lets the cameras follow him as he goes on a motorbike ride into one of the few places in the world that the sports icon isn't recognised - the depths of the Amazon. We attended a screening of some clips from the documentary and a Q&A with Beckham earlier today (June 2). Here are 7 things we learned at the show's launch:
1. Victoria Beckham's biggest concern is pretty funny.
If your husband was heading off on a trek across Brazil on a motorbike, what would be your first concern? His safety? Him staying in contact? With Posh Spice, it was something very, very different. "The humidity will be the thing. In the Amazon, one minute it will be boiling hot, the next it will be pouring with rain," says David.
Victoria's awesome response: "What are you going to do about your hair? That's why I don't go to these countries, because of the humidity with my hair. What are you going to do?" "I'm going to wear a hat?" says David. "You should wear a hat for your whole thing," she replies with a smile.
2. The film shows us what David Beckham is like as a father for the first time.
Despite being one of the most famous families in the world, we very rarely get a glimpse into the Beckhams' private lives. However, this documentary does feature a cameo from their oldest son Brooklyn and showcases David's softer side as he plays football at the back of the house with his son.
"You are going to be the big boy and look after your mum and brothers and sister," says David. "You've got to do all the cooking." "Are you going to miss me?" he adds. The super-sweet Brooklyn winds up his dad by simply replying: "Maybe."
3. David Beckham hasn't been able to have a kickaround
If you're David Beckham, you don't ever really get the chance to have a jumpers-for-goalposts-style muck-around with your mates in the park. The former Manchester United star said that the closest he's come in the last 25 years was on a UNICEF charity trip and even that ended up in chaos with everyone wanting to join in.
So it's wonderful to watch Beckham release his inner 8-year-old when he gets the chance to play beach football in Rio. Not only has he still got some incredible skills (someone get on the phone to Roy Hodgson!), his pure love for the game shines brightly. At the end of it all, the locals can't quite believe their luck.
4. David Beckham gets scared. By everything.
Before his trip, David's son Brooklyn looks concerned about how his father will cope sleeping in the jungle on the trip. His fears are well-justified because it turns out that the super-cool Becks is actually a bit of a wuss.
Snakes, spiders... frogs - they all leave Beckham hiding in his hammock. Looking back at the film, which shows him getting the chills from a piddling-looking python, he laughed: "I wish the snake had been bigger. It was bigger than it looks on TV!"
5. There are some people in the world who don't know who David Beckham is.
One of Beckham's main quests on the journey was to liberate himself by finding somewhere in the world where his face isn't recognised and where people don't want a selfie with him. The footy star succeeds in achieving that as he meets the Yanomami tribe, who have previously never let cameras into their village.
Not only do the tribes not have a clue who he is, Beckham also has to explain the whole concept of football to them. "It's the first time I've ever had to do that," he admits.
6. Michael Palin gives Becks the thumbs up.
If you were looking for an endorsement for your work on a travel documentary, Michael Palin would surely come somewhere near the top. Beckham has revealed that he hopes to make some more documentaries in the same style and the Monty Python star is already looking forward to them.
"I hope you do some more. You're a really good observer and you don't force your views," said Palin. "It's a cracker!"
He also singled out Beckham's "great dynamic" with his friends and crew on the trip and beautiful work from the crew and technical team, who capture Brazil in all its stunning beauty.
7. David comes face to face with a man's genitals.
David revealed during the Q&A that he got to see more than he bargained for when he was chopping up the vegetables with one of the Brazilian tribes. "He was all covered in black paint and totally naked and then he stood up. I looked up and he was right in my eyeline," laughed David.
"He's talking to me and he refused to come down to my level. It's a funny moment, because you can see me looking everywhere except where my eye-level is."
David Beckham: Into The Unknown airs at 8.30pm on Monday, June 9 on BBC One.
