These days, his famous name may get him auditions with renowned directors and tables at the best restaurants, but it apparently wasn't always so easy living with the name Jude Law. During an appearance on Friday night's Graham Norton Show, the 43-year-old actor says it was tricky growing up with a 'girl' name in London. 'It’s not the easiest name to grow up with in South East London to be really honest – a blond annoying little boy wanting to be an actor called Jude,' he told Graham.
'There were some perks though,' he added. 'When I was about 17 I got asked to join this national theatre company and I was put in the girls’ dormitory because they assumed I was a girl, which was fine by me! I kept quiet for a couple of nights!'
However, the actor's comments came despite actually being named David Jude Heyworth Law by his parents. Jude is promoting his new HBO TV series The Young Pope which airs next week on UK channel Sky Atlantic.
'It was great to have a part to sink my teeth into – huge great speeches and a chance to speak Latin,' he said.
'It was an extraordinary part to play. I was surprised to find out how hardwired I am to playing a part over two hours. Playing a part over 10 hours was really unusual and a much slower burn to reveal the character.'
Jude joined Tom Cruise, Catherine Tate and Cobie Smulders on the talk show, with Tom promoting his latest film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
