Cabaret - Kit Kat Klub Time Lapse

In Winter of 2014, the iconic Studio 54 was once again transformed into the Weimer-era Kit Kat Klub in preparation for Roundabout Theatre Company's remounting of their Tony Award-winning production of Cabaret.

Here's what six weeks of labor looks like in 90 seconds. Many thanks to all of the designers and crew members who made this possible!

Cabaret - Emma Stone joins the cast Nov 11

Starting November 11, the Kit Kat Klub welcomes Golden Globe® nominee Emma Stone (Easy A, The Help), making her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles for a limited time only alongside Tony® winner Alan Cumming (“The Good Wife,” Roundabout’s The Threepenny Opera) as the Emcee in Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall's (Nine and Chicago, the films) Tony-winning production of Cabaret, also starring Tony nominees Danny Burstein (Follies) and Linda Emond (Death of a Salesman).

Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd––and to leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through their dangerous times?

Christopher Isherwood’s creation Sally Bowles has passed through as many incarnations as a Hindu goddess, each time retaining her essential attributes—green nails, ratty furs, and those stomach-turning prairie oysters. First there was Jean Ross, the British novelist’s real-life Berlin roommate and literary inspiration. Out of her the writer confected Sally, the heroine of Goodbye to Berlin (1939), a flamboyant vixen with a face “powdered dead white.” In John Van Druten’s 1951 play, I Am a Camera, the quirky chanteuse was channeled by Julie Harris, whom Isherwood decreed “more essentially Sally Bowles than the Sally of my book.” Next, with the release of the 1972 movie musical Cabaret, Liza Minnelli took temporary possession of Sally’s flighty soul. But Sally’s mercurial spirit has since migrated to Molly Ringwald, Brooke Shields, Michelle Williams, and now, starting November 11 at the Roundabout Theatre’s Studio 54, in New York, Emma Stone. “I’ve wanted to play Sally Bowles since I was 10, when I saw Natasha Richardson in Cabaret,” says the 26-year-old Broadway newcomer, who earned a 2010 Golden Globe nomination for Easy A. “Rob Marshall”—co-director, with Sam Mendes, of the current production—“said to me that Sally is like Hamlet for women.” Cabaret’s ongoing Emcee, Alan Cumming (for whom Emma Stone is Sally No. 6), explains, “It’s unusual for young actresses to get such completeness in a role. Sally is vulnerable, tragic, funny, unlikable, heartbreaking. And then she gets whacked across the face with an epiphany.” Stone adds, “I don’t think I’ve ever been so truly obsessed with a character or a story. I can’t believe this is actually happening!”

New Interview of Emma with Speakeasy

You’re about to play Sally Bowles in “Cabaret” on Broadway. What emotions do you feel with Sally’s song “Maybe This Time”?

I just went through the scene the other day and worked out that scene with Bill Heck, the guy who plays Cliff. I mean, I just yesterday for the first time got on stage and sang that song, which is really surreal.

Theater is always an evolving idea, but right now that song seems to me the most optimistic we ever get to see her. I feel like that’s in some ways the most hopeful point of the show until the very end of the song. So I’m sort of thinking about that right now. She has a respite from all of the things that are racing through her mind all the time.

How about her final song, “Cabaret”?

I could sing that all day, every day. That’s just my favorite thing in the world. I’m still in rehearsals, so everything is always changing, and I’m trying things for the first time, in that capacity. I’ve been singing it in my bedroom or in my head for 16 years but never actually on stage at Studio 54. I don’t really know yet where it will land or how it will all end up, but it’s just the coolest, coolest thing, and I’m really happy and excited.

How are Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall guiding you?

My first official week of rehearsal was last week, so when I go back we’ll be able to dive in a little bit deeper. I’ve gotten to talk about the character a lot with them. It’s been something I’ve been mulling over for about a year and a half so it just feels like I’m learning how to take all that stuff—the singing in the bedroom, all that’s been happening internally—and externalize it. They’re helping me through that. They just know the show very well and they have for a long time, so that’s incredibly helpful.
